What is Thermoplastic?

Thermoplastic is a polymer material (plastic), which turns to a liquid when heated, and then becomes a (glassy) solid when cooled.

Thermoplastic can be heated, reshaped and cooled repeatedly, giving it its name. This property also makes thermoplastic recyclable.

Two common forms of thermoplastic used in furnishings are:

Plastisol - A form of thermoplastic coating which has a softer feel, is approximately 1/4" thick, has UV protectant, is anti-fungal, can be used for indoor and outdoor applications, and more of a smooth, glossy finish.

Textured Polyethylene - A form of thermoplastic coating which has a harder feel, is approximately 1/8" thick, has UV protectant, is anti-fungal, can be used for indoor and outdoor applications, and has more of a matte, textured finish.

Benefits of Thermoplastic Coating:

Durable yet resilient surface - scratch, cut, and tear resistant Keeps cool in the sun - no painful burns Anti-fungal - perfect in the shade Corrosive free - easy to maintain Thick and soft coating on rounded edges - gentler for a fall
